iMac Pro (IMP) All-in-One: 8 & 10 core Hands-on, Benchmarks, wipe/reinstall, & RAM upgrades

(i need has 8 core vega 56 , 10 core vega 64)

imac pro ram upgrades:
people have read imac pro can have ram upgraded, not us. talked apple 6 month ago subject & here's learned:

1) teardown enthusiasts can upgrade own ram @ cost of risking warranty violation
2) apple upgrade ram @ apple ram cost (you buy ram still)
3) third party authorized apple service center upgrade ram choice of either apple provided ram or:

can bring own ram & have authorized third party service center install it. warranty retained. ram carry ram's manufacturer's warrant & have have ram related issues serviced third party after install. apple replace original quantity installed upon purchase unless upgrade through apple. if upgrade 32gb ram 128 on own & flakes out, if take apple, replace 32gb apple ram. authorized third party pull ram & ask do...that's can have sent in replaced on own & bring replacement installed.

live, "core care of rocklin" provides service. apple sent me there when needed macbook's battery replaced still needed keep access laptop. core care did test, ordered battery, & called me supply macbook when ready install it. 1 hr turnaround. that's third parties can you. cost of replacing ram $70-150 plus cost of ram.

how find authorized third party service center? ask apple support & provide list of nearest authorized service centers. know good, run diagnostics report & submit apple & give copy. apple when work.

risks?
1) costs service center service payment
2) crack screen open risk dust between glass & lcd
3) entire motherboard needs pulled out risk damage. humans imperfect. once had dell laptop returned service center trackpad broken. couldn't fix motherboard, tear apart myself find forgot plug trackpad in...one of on dozen connections.
4) compatibility issues: not ram equal & have issues. have them full memory test before giving back. 2017 imac owners learned when using kingston's low cl ram...they learned if mix it, ram down clocks.

hope helps & have great day!

cpu geekbench benchmarks:
initial benchmarks geekbench:
8 core: 4937 single thread / 30088 multi thread
10 core 2: 4971 single thread / 34006 multi thread
10 core: 5345 single thread / 35917 multi thread
i7 (2017 imac) 5715 single thread / 19675 multi thread

10 core 8.2% faster on single threaded operations , 19.4% faster on multi threaded operations

keep in mind synthetic total number , if @ single core ops, each better @ things.

10 core: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/4449687
10 core 2: http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/5469097
8 core: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/5471001
i7: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/5543682

source:
http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/search?utf8=✓&q=mac-7ba5b2d9e42ddd94

update: added second core 2 popped up. basically, shows first benchmark single thread operations matches 8 core...which more along line of how expecting 2 cores perform. basically, i'm waiting series of longer benchmarks cpus perform more continuously rigor.

basically, cpu needs measured stressed. split second, momentary test capture max clock (4.5 vs 3.0 10 core). artificially show 10 core performing single thread ops higher. also, cache has affect helps boost performance on 10 core. expected performance boost due that, not 9% gain. can more when more time consuming benchmarks come out.

many of seeing, 8 & 10 cores follows:

8 core: 3.2 ghz base, max 4.3
10 core: 3.0 ghz base, max 4.5

it's $800 upgrade ($720 if discounted through epp or edu)

performance should same on single core tasks & 10 core beat 8 17% on multi core tasks. me, equates 10 min savings on 1hr project. couldn't justify upgrade. i'll post 8 core benchmark when mine comes in.

thermal tests:

thermals of 10 core:

(c/o: nick82)

thermals of 8 core:
(c/o: bplein)

takeaway:
8 core runs @ 3.9 ghz constantly; 93 degrees
10 core runs @ 3.5 ghz average; 95 degrees, thermally clocking down

geekbench shows single thread higher performer (which affects gaming) in 10 core because thermals off of left image shows not heat quickly...& geek bench not last long enough clock down.

drive wiping & reinstalling osx high sierra without dfu:
careful here. used bootcamp & had issue required me install 8 (which not supported imac pro). had wipe bootcamp partition because corrupted after wiping. bootcamp assistant did not give me option remove bootcamp partition on own. bootcamp not allow me reinstall after either. if want upgrade method, provided have upgraded once in past, follow link bootcamp details:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/imac-pro-bootcamp-windows-10-limit-fix.2097652/

booted regular recovery, disabled boot security, & wiped osx partition well...only osx partition there appeared more. created new apfs partition & went install osx. went successful. did not need dfu boot.

apple solid state drives
commercial market attempts sell "fast" drives hold high read & write sequential disk operations. apple drives job doing this. can see reflected in blackmagic disk speed tests. problem is, of our operations fall within 4k realm or close (ref: thessdreview.com). per les tokar, 4k or 4kqd32 results should looking at. apple pretty job here well. used amorphousdiskmark authorized osx conversion of crystal disk mark, not use same read/write methods differ windows. can compare amorphous tests other amorphous tests.

1tb:
teardown, know 1tb drives consists of 2 512gb modules connected in raid.
(c/o: bplein)

2tb:
likely, 2tb drives 2 1tb modules connected in raid well, no teardown has been performed configuration.

gpu tests:
bplein, got @ graphics tests. used vega 64 card & posted cinebench r15 results. these reference against gpu master list of benchmarks located @ https://www.notebookcheck.net/mobile-graphics-cards-benchmark-list.844.0.html . update default list, change show gpus (desktop & mobile) & add cenebench r15.

1255.99 fps, holds own against nvidia. notebook check results limited high end cards, 1080 ti sli desktop appears lower @ 119fps, there benchmarks of 1080 being in 160 range. you'd have dig card details see results. performance should along line of nvidia 1070 desktop gpu.

awaiting vega 56 results.

attached files:

i doing similar math.
3.2*8=25.6
3.0*10=30

boosted:
4.3*8=34.4
4.5*10=45

you'll see solid increase in turbo boost on applications take advantage of multiple cores.

assume both of these chips support hyper threading, no? it's 8/10 physical cores 16/20 total cores logically speaking.

$800 entirely personal decision workflow, still work lot of software doesn't take advantage of multiple cores higher base frequency still impact day day whereas weekly 4k editing nice have 10 cores transcoding simultaneously.
