It looks like the GPU in my iMac is dead.

so first thing of 2018 have take care of, looks gpu in 2011 27inch imac has gave up.

browsing web on facebook , of sudden, screen turned vertical lines. consider upgraded ssd inside month ago, thought, okay perhaps it's 1 of bugs inevitable aftermarket ssds. no biggie, restart, booted system within seconds , windows restored. within 5 seconds, screen flicked vertical lines again. @ point, system rebooting. press option key , go disk selection mode (or whatever call it, no recover options there).

did brief research , looks gpu busted , perhaps disable gpu , enter safe mode , save files before else.

has else experienced before? guess after 7 years, appropriate new imac when comes out, still otherwise fine machine that's capable of doing do.

also...do need i7? don't serious video/photo editing anymore once in while stupid vlog video type of thing. oh , play wow :)

sounds gpu dead.

assume try pram , smc reset.

if want boot recovery, try holding command + r during boot. option boot won't help.

gpu dead, may can still extract data via target disk mode.

since upgrade internal drive ssd, may can open machine again, , check if gpu , associated cables still looks (just in case accidentally damage something, or not connected properly. also, have no experience on replacing ssd on imac, if ever remote heatsink. did correctly re-apply thermal paste?) if nothing looks wrong, , want recover data, it's nothing simpler extract ssd. in fact, give current imac, thing still better keep ssd future use anyway.
