Pretty much as I thought, HDR makes no difference.

iphone x versus non-hdr 4k display. colors looks more similar in person, there hardly difference.

doesn't mean iphone x can't better, if turn brightness, amazing contrast kill lcd monitor obviously, ability isn't dependent on hdr content or video. can existing content.

if know hdr is, , think it, realize there 2 primary reasons hdr better:
  1. high hardware brightness , contrast ratio (which doesn't work when manually reduce brightness)
  2. the higher contrast ratio makes higher bit-depth visible eye (but iphone x doesn't have high bit-depth)
the first reason works on content, not "hdr" branded content.
second reason doesn't work because isn't available.
if have lcd device ipad pro 2017, iphone 8, nothing work. correctly convert hdr image sdr image. , yes tried ipad.

what's take-away story here, don't obsess "hdr" lable, have play content, , turn brightness. (when play hdr labeled content, system automatically this)
in fact don't need iphone x this, it's same thing oled device decent peak brightness.

not work youtube videos hdr. because isn't recognized, image gamma not correctly converted. in weird way, have watch stream isn't hdr work correctly.

hdr makes tons of difference if display , content right. see myself on ps4 pro hdr enabled games.
have x well, haven’t tested hdr related on yet.
has 8-bit panel, 1 of reasons why x not great hdr content begin with.
