The railfan (railroad travel enthusiasts) thread ?

any railfans here ? didn't see thread here already, ...

words/acronyms amtrak, tgv, ice, ave mean ? if so, share experiences/opinions.

i've been fan of rail travel since age of 6 or so. fav. mode of transport, , i've traveled train in following countries:

- usa (amtrak , alaskan railroad)
- switzerland (urban transit , sightseer)
- germany (ice 200 km/h)
- italy (trenitalia)
- spain (ave high speed 300 km/h)
- india (low on speed, high on soul)

don't mind slow trains, because me, when take train somewhere, train trip major part of vacation. me, rail travel slowing down, seeing sights, talking people, , generally, new experiences. if want speed, i'll fly instead.

not dislike speed - find myself watching , rewatching videos of tgv (french high speed record holder) 2007 world record test run

alaska railroad (leaving anchorage aug 4, 2008)



highlights among experiences probably:

- having beer @ 11 best buddy, speeding through gorgeous german countryside between berlin , munich
- seeing shockingly pristine scenery winding through swiss alps on way jungfraujoch @ 13k feet
- taking amtrak coast starlight california oregon, sitting in sightseer lounge car, drinking wine, meeting weirdest of people (done trip multiple times)
- seeing glaciers alaska railroad trains (image above)
- barcelona-madrid spanish ave fun, speed ... 300 km/h. felt 60 km/h.

happened meet first ever girlfriend on amtrak, many years ago, don't know if "highlight"

 

i have wanted badly take train trip somewhere!
sorta coast along, sip wine, , enjoy scenery--maybe i'm romanticizing idea, can't speak experience; thought fun!
