Introducing the Remora Drive...

okay, it's not actual product, , it's not you'd call elegant, works. bought 2015 mbp when released. on 2012 mac mini, had on 500 gb of content (including photos , itunes music, excluding dvd rips , other videos). couldn't afford mbp 1tb of storage, , 512 mb wasn't enough, went 256 mb base model. past couple years, kept data , media files on external hard drive. whole point of having laptop computer, though, portability , convenience, , having external drive dangling off side convenient. true when sitting outside on deck chair. i'd have use lap desk enough room mbp , hard drive. thought getting owc 1tb internal ssd upgrade, @ $649, couldn't justify it.

, hit me: velcro! i'd purchased 1tb ssd crucial mac mini. replaced 128mb ssd , created fusion drive. put 1tb ssd sabrent usb 3.0 enclosure, applied strip of velcro mbp , drive enclosure, , voila! when need connect other peripherals, pop mbp vertical henge dock base station. again, may not pretty (i doubt jony ive approve), functional. shorter usb cable aesthetics tad.

 

although more expensive current solution, replace internal drive adapter , nvme drive.
