Iphone with google photos

my iphone has limited free space, , looking cloud can save photos, safely store them there or save ext hard drive, , delete phone. have these questions though:
1. apple's icloud seems not option because if delete photo phone, deleted cloud, far can tell, not true of google photos, right? if backup google photos, can delete picture phone , still have on google photos?
2. there issues saving google photos computer or external hard drive?
3. people iphone picture less 16mp not compressed or altered when saved google photos free storage, true? iphone photos saved in original form google photos?
4. if google decides discontinue google photos day, happen photos saved there? hope have advanced notice @ least save them elsewhere , not lose them.
5. when google photos iphone pics? put under settings use date phone , videos there seems random lag of automatic backing of photos when have internet connection, of 15-20 minutes.
6. there issues backing iphone videos , quality lost?

 

i've been using google photos many years (since picassa). automatically iphone pictures. relatives surprised @ how , able locate photo family wedding in 2008. "but didn't have iphone then!"
