2012 iMac internal drive questions

a 2012 21.5" i7 imac delivered here yesterday. had planned on using external ssd's & hdd's pro-audio work do. had planned on using 5400 internal drive storage & 2nd boot drive if needed.

when turn machine on no hard drive shows up. doesn't show in disk utility. doesn't show in system info. it's if computer built without hard drive @ all. if boot system recovery no internal drive shown.

happens when hdd craps out? trace of existence on machine disappear?

machine boot external system usb3 ssd, thankfully. runs better old 2009>2010 mac pro did. got rma number paid, there's nothing can find comparable. i'm thinking of keeping it. thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

 

i have old 12 fusion lost hdd part altogether , has 1xxgb ssd. think i'd go usb3 external ssd not expensive , pretty speed. maybe tb external little faster think 12 tb1 , tb ext drives going more expensive. don't bother mechanical drives other backups. slow.
