what real safety/ security risks of staying on older version of ios?

have iphone 5c on ios 10 , ipad 2 on ios 9. neither can upgraded beyond versions of ios. thinking family or using these devices in 1 way or until die

real safety / security risks of using these devices going forward?
 

nearly 100 common vulnerabilities , exposures (cve) fixed in ios 11.0 alone. additional 24 resolved in ios 11.1.

if want safe, avoid using old devices perform transactions sensitive personal information.

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fine
