VERY slow install of high Sierra

hi
install has been running on 24 hours, having looked other forum threads have checked log (im not savvy) , lazy thing operating every couple of hours having rest. isn't normal! work harder that.
thought might wifi connection transported macbook air late 2010, high speed wifi. proceeded work @ 10:26 14:46 bit @ 16:12. install screen still showing - there no countdown. im running 10.8.5
have 4gb ram , 35 gb available on disk im installing to.
should persevere or have attempt other safe mode solutions ive been reading about?

the installation shouldn't take long. macbook equipped ssd drive, shouldn't slowing traffic either.
big jump (from 10.8 10.13), , low harddrive capacity issue.

if downloaded high sierra app store, download of files have been taken care of. files local. high sierra convert harddrive apfs, aborting before time, cause problems, file system corruption, meaning files gone, unless have backup?

if still see desktop, still preparing installation, , should able stop it, if has restarted, have grey background, process of upgrading mac has started, , more experienced guys need pitch in. since havn't had installation go wrong before, in unfamiliar territory.
