mail not connecting in El Capitan after upgrade

last week upgraded os on mac mini mountain lion el capitan.
following upgrade, unable download new email messages in mail.

settings correct , can send outgoing emails error message when tries connect retrieve new mail.
checked isp , verified settings had correct. same settings work & able retrieve mail on ipad.

suggestions how fix this?

something try, shot in dark:

go mail preferences.
open "accounts".
click "advanced".
note first checkbox setting -- "automatically detect , maintain account settings".

if has checkmark, try unchecking , see if changes anything.

if not have checkmark, try checking , see if changes anything.

again, shot in dark.

beyond this, start tinkering settings.
i, too, have experienced periodic "glitches" mail vs. isp.
frustrating until running again.

if nothing else working, consider using app thunderbird set "a test account". t-bird work using same settings mail.app ??
