Password Protected .DMG Alternatives for Both Mac and Windows?

hey everyone,

i've been using external hd filled of documents/files standard hd connect whatever computer might have access @ time , browse/use way.

documents such credit cards , other accounts i've made .txt file in password protected .dmg , until worked fine , served me needed since i'm surrounded macs in house.

however, going using other computers running windows on, wondering alternative .dmg can store , password protect sensitive documents in , still able use (read & write) on both mac , windows.

other info in-case matters:

i'm not paranoid safety hacking. it's having hd fall wrong hands (possibly getting mugged?) i'm afraid of, , have random stranger read sensitive data.

i'm open kinds of alternatives, besides cloud service, don't have internet access.
