Upgrade to macOS 10.3.1 High Sierra? Some concerns...

hello everyone!

i'm looking @ high sierra @ .1 release level , i'm still not sure whether should it.

, honest, geek, of course want see new stuff, me includes so-called under-the-hood improvements.

if upgrade, i'm not sure wanting convert apfs. don't being forced convert begin with, of startup disk ssd, there's way prevent high sierra converting apfs, has done @ installer level.

brings me 1 key question upgrading: apfs noticeably faster? mean besides making duplicate copies of files locally, doesn't impress me, have no need that. move tons of files around, on external (non-ssd) hard drives.

why concerned:

moved os x 10.11.6, i'd been fond of, 10.12.6 sierra, because forced due being on new 2016 macbook pro.

far, don't little surprises sierra has thrown @ me, example when found out had hack os able launch non-app store apps, or, apple calls them, "unidentified" applications.

os x version prior saw disk utility deprecated, , apple's continued efforts ios-ify macos has been annoying me. don't me wrong, love how ios , macos play together. it's great eco-system. let macos macos.

advice appreciated.

 

if you're unsure committing high sierra, why not "test install" external drive?

then, can boot it, test apps, run awhile, etc. -- without "endangering" current installation.

in case, if decide try on main (internal) drive, suggest before doing upgrade, use either carboncopycloner or superduper create bootable cloned backup of current os on external drive.

if have such backup, , don't high sierra, it's easy , simple "get once belonged".
if don't have such backup, can still "get back" -- it's not going easy.

also:
recommend install hs using usb flashdrive installer.
can use 1 of following create it:
- boot buddy
- diskmaker x
- install disk creator
you'll need copy of installer app , usb flashdrive 16gb or larger.
makes things easier!
