Odd bug sometimes stops Photos from opening or repairing library on SD card

i have 2013 mba 128gb ssd.

photos stores system library on 200gb sdxc card in side slot of mba, specs follows:

- sandisk ultra 200 gb microsdxc uhs-i
- nifty minidrive air silver microsd card adaptor

every , then, opening photos causes throw wobbly, , 'photos cannot open or repair library, please quit or select different library.' quite scary when have 5000 photos in library. restarting doesn't seem fix it. pressing option-cmd , clicking on library file starts repair process, @ 5% halts saying 'this library cannot repaired'.

fix seems to take out nifty minidrive , re-insert it. seems reset something, , photos able open library again, no repair needed.

mba on macos 10.13 high sierra, happened on either 10.12 sierra or 10.11 el capitan (can't remember version running before doing major update few weeks ago).

wouldn't use setup you're using library storage -- unreliable. many things "go wrong" on -- sdxc micro card; adapter card.

i'd switch kind of usb3 drive instead, either "all in one" solution, this:

... or, buy 2.5" "bare" ssd , usb3 enclosure support uasp, , "roll own" drive.

granted, have external device has plugged macbook.
-- fewer problems.

@ least, keep setup have , else onto (like drives suggested above). remember 1 copy of library not enough.

another thought:
high sierra has been reported quite "flaky" in how handles mounting/dismounting of usb drives. believe card slot "seen" os if usb connection (i wrong).
problems you're experiencing may due quirk in high sierra, , have little nifty card setup.

try this:
next time photos "objects" card (i.e., doesn't open library), try this:
1. quit photos
2. open disk utility
3. "see presence" of nifty?
4. if disk utility can't see it, perhaps os has "unmounted" it.
explain why photos can't see it, either.

there out there called "mountain" -- small utility can mount/unmount external drives. i'm wondering if used "re-mount" sd card?

-- have gone energy saver preference pane , unchecked option "put disks sleep when possible"?
