Replacing external HDD, best way to copy data?

i’m getting ready replace 5tb external drive new wd 8tb drive. i’m wondering if there way copy data old drive new considered “best practice”? in past i’ve drag , dropped folders via finder window, know there way via disk utility app. i’m sure there various third party apps same. 1 way considered better, faster, and/or more reliable other when dealing multiple terabytes of data?

i have used carbon copy cloner such disk administration tasks. developer offers 30-day free trial.

have not compared other gui disk administration tools since has worked me.

far can tell, disk utility not have cloning or copying functionality available end user.

macos have *nix 'dd' command line utility, may possible clone disks using that. using parameters "clone mac disk dd" results in online tutorials cannot vouch accuracy of such articles.

cloned unix drives on twenty years ago using 'dd' utility not know command line invocations required successful cloning of contemporary mac drive.
