Macbook Pro: white screen on startup


hello!

happened salvage old 2009 macbook pro 15 inch non-retina. didnt come hard drives , os, threw in ssd , made bootable usb drive macos mountain lion, in hopes of upgrading os later.

issue when hold down control access startup options on boot, comes white screen , cursor, , nothing else!

i've tried loading safe mode , recovery system. short time apple logo showed i'm getting file question mark, regardless of do.

i've done nvram , smc resets, unplugged ssd , ran usb itself, unplug battery bit, , other jazz. still no luck.

first apple product i'm new , forums, made bootable usb windows 10 using transmac. don't know if make difference i'm throwing out possible options.

ideas/tips on how fix this? said i'm new appreciated. thanks!

Other Unknown error

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fin...
