iPhone X Purchase advise

i buy new iphone , not sure 1 take. have old 4 right battery life short , can no longer update software, it's no longer practical. waiting x year turns out thing ridiculously large, don't want walk around carrying brick in pocket. 8 alternative tried 1 , feels large me well. looking smallest iphone maximum capacity. so, consider doing purchase old 5 , wait until apple releases smaller iphone x version. chance happen year or wishful thinking?

iphone se still available , perfect size believe. can them $150 @ best buy at&t go phone , activate on at&t main plans, or other providers have similar ones.
