i got 2017 macbook pro (256 gb) , want external hd or ssd store media and/or time machine backups. assume want connect directly thunderbolt 3 connector not sure 1 on amazon. thinking 1 tb drive sufficient , don't want break bank it. please advise drive (with link) get? it's been long time since i've used mac sorry noobie question! tia!
you don't need "thunderbolt".
do need usb-c external 2.5" drive (either platter-based hdd, or ssd).
i'm not sure how many "pre-packaged" hdds out there yet have usb-c connector. in case, pick usb3 drive usb-a port on drive, , use usb-a usb-c cable, , work fine.
samsung t5 external ssds. these nice, might not worth expense tm backup (which doesn't require speed).
might want consider 2 external drives:
- 1 backups, exclusively
and
- media , external storage.
if money consideration, i'd suggest 2tb external.
partition "two pieces", , use 1 partition tm backup, , other "general storage space".
final thought (on topic didn't ask):
i'd consider carboncopycloner or superduper instead of tm.
either 1 creates bootable cloned backup can boot in emergency.
both free download , try out 30 days.
if don't them, erase cloned backup , use tm instead.
