Airport and Verizon DSL

over past few years, household has been nagged minor source of irritation. have no idea means or how deal it.

goes this...

couple of years ago, replaced aging 2004-vintage airport base station. base station hooked via cat5 cable verizon dsl modem. used (approx.) 2007-vintage airport express range booster , connection hp laserjet via short ethernet cable. having problems network (blackouts in wifi service).

solution: bought factory-refurbished airport express base station direct apple's web-store. made hugely disappointing discovery older wifi , computer hardware not compatible newer airport gear. airport software utility not recognize older express , not let on network. have ancient g4 imac use (archive) file server. no go on new lan. buying refurbished airport extreme apple. believe both newest extreme , express latest generation.

in last couple of years, our household has been relying on newest extreme base station, connected cat5 cable , verizon dsl modem , internet. of problems vanished.

except: there occasional hiccup in internet connection. makes no sense. happen once day, once week or once month. anywhere 1 3 minutes, there total interruption in internet service. , blackout occurs, vanishes if never happened. if try call verizon technical support when happens, problem gone before can on phone talk to.

replaced ethernet cable modem airport base station brand new one. tried replacing verizon dsl modem. nothing changes. verizon's newer modems real pain because have wifi router built-in , if don't want use wifi, have settings , turn off, , don't let have diplomatic dance foreign tech support personnel (who not speak english primary language) them turn modem's wifi off. don't hear you're using airport.

unless apple in business of pedaling low-quality refurbished airport gear on site, i'm tempted suspect it's verizon problem. have no idea how address it.

when call verizon help, on phone isn't on same continent , obvious told put through kinds of rigorous tests designed avoid consideration problem verizon's lines or hardware outside house. routine goes this: have unplug network modem, have plug computer directly modem via ethernet. (the modem in storage room makes necessary lug computer in there, set up, plug in , go through procedures test connection.)

have had dsl service through verizon here since dec. 2002. of time, there absolutely no problem. there occasional hiccups requiring put diagnostic procedure mentioned in previous paragraph. few , far between. when had replace old airport couple of years ago, new infrequent interruption in service issue kept nagging us. has never gone away. feels our internet service has been throttled. seems slow.

can't see how on our end.

live on side hill on outskirts of town. rest of town got dsl same time did. local cable tv company offers high-speed internet, , both verizon , cable company nickel-and-dime monthly bill until make phone, tv , internet expensive.

same time having blackout problems, verizon installed new cell tower few miles out our road , strung fiber optic lines out tower. talked verizon linemen , asked if meant getting verizon fios (fiber optic service) in our neighborhood. (we promised verizon in 2007.) line crew said no, cell tower.

verizon no longer allows complain local office or line crew if have problem. have call tech support line , diplomatic dance on continent who's pre-programmed bias have wrong equipment, not theirs.

short of ditching verizon , moving cave somewhere, wondering if else had thoughts on this. @ present, we're using newer airport extreme modem; else shelved.

thoughts:

time leave airport behind , "move on".
suggest take 4-6 weeks , thorough investigation of new "mesh" type systems.

of available ones:
- linksys velop
- netgear orbi
- ubiquiti "amplifi"
- google wifi
- eero
there others well.

mesh "the way of future", larger homes or living spaces enough square footage or obstructions aren't coverage single wifi router.

plenty of user reviews check on amazon , elsewhere.
of these use ios app (on iphone or ipad -- there's android version too) setup. orbi , velop can setup web browser, well.

i've had earlier "flat" airport extreme has worked 7+ years, have linksys velop puts out stronger signal everywhere...
