Best external hard drive to go with 256 SSD?


so, ended getting imac 256ssd on , wondering fast/reliable external hard drive can use it? preferably 1tb , apple store has since have $150 gift card them.

moving movies , jpg files in it, nothing else.

what's difference between usb 3.0 , thunderbolt ones? understand ssd ones more reliable seem expensive. prefer stay under $200. suggestions?

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fine
