im going change stock 750gb spinner drive ssd. plan on using ccc clone prior opening system , swapping drives. now, ive got 2012 mbp (currently running sierra, not going hs yet)... got hdd caddy owc replace optical drive hdd , putting 750gb drive in there. after doing this, when fire computer, know boot ssd, or boot spinner? since both identical. or ask me drive boot from? id not wipe , format spinner until after booted on ssd.
you tell under system preferences disk boot from. suggest, try booting ssd in caddy before installing in computer.

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fin...
