Can't use purgeable disk space


i'd grateful clarification on whether should able use purgeable disk space has been freed activating icloud storage our photos.

our macbook hd full, , can't update latest version of xcode result. decided pay additional icloud storage, , put our photos in cloud use 90gb. selected option optimise locally saved copies , store full resolution ones in cloud, seems have freed 40gb or so, shown purgeable disk space.

understanding purgeable space should useable, , should therefore able install xcode update, app store still telling me need 1.75gb.

have misunderstood how should work?

move local version of our photo library external drive anyway, grateful if offer clarification.

com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930878

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fine
