paper titled "end-to-end learning point cloud based 3d object detection", , describes how new software developed apple scientists improves ability of lidar (light detection , ranging) systems recognize objects including pedestrians , cyclists distance.

self-driving cars typically use combination of standard cameras , depth-sensing lidar units receive information world around them.

apple's research team said able "highly encouraging results" using lidar data alone spot cyclists , pedestrians, , wrote able beat other approaches detecting 3d objects rely solely on lidar tech. experiments limited computer simulations , did not advance road tests.

apple famously has secretive research policy , has kept work under wraps many years, on last 12 months, company has shared of research advancements other researchers , wider public, particularly in area of machine learning.

in december 2016, apple said start allowing ai , machine learning researchers publish , share work in papers, first paper appearing few weeks following announcement.

additionally, in july of year, apple researchers initiated "apple machine learning journal", blog detailing work on machine learning, ai, , other related topics.

new policy of openness apple retain employees not want keep progress secret, latest research autonomous vehicle technology lets regulators see company making progress in area. last december, apple told federal regulators excited technology , asked them not restrict testing. in april, company filed self-driving car testing plan california regulators.

apple ceo tim cook has called autonomy "the mother of ai projects". during august 2017 earnings call, cook re-emphasized apple's deep interest in technology, , hinted apple's work on autonomy used more vehicles.

apple has presumably been working on autonomous driving system since 2014, when rumors of efforts create electric vehicle first surfaced. apple has moved away creating full vehicle , said focusing on self-driving technology instead.
