iPhone 6(+) With 96 GB available on my HD, why can't I restore a lousy 16 GB iPhone backup?


i'm trying restore backup of wife's iphone 6s. photos unfortunately deleted, i'd them back.

i'm using itunes restore, goes through 25 minute process , when gets down last 5 minutes tells me not complete task because there not enough space on hard drive.

iphone has 16 gb of memory. have 96 gb free on imac's hard drive, backup stored. why telling me don't have enough space restore? don't it.
 

interesting.. how big backup?.. use windows not familiar mac yet..

com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930878

here's odd one! 1 of our 2015 macbook air notebooks in office crashed , became unbootable after user clicked high sierra upgrade sierra on it. tried sorts of things working again, including both internet recovery , regular recovery. each time, partially install high sierra , stop error saying, "macos not installed on computer", followed specific error code mentioned in message subject line. have identically configured air (8gb ram, 512gb ssd, core i7) upgraded sierra high sierra without problems @ all, should work! thing able problem machine installing sierra usb thumb drive. did that, of user's data accessible again (nothing lost, thankfully!) , working normally. tried running high sierra upgrade again fresh app store download, hoping original issue stupid user powering computer off in middle of upgrade process. nope! exact same error , resulting unbootable machine. computer passes apple hardware tests flying colors , seems fine
