Returning iPhone for a different model?

i purchased 256gb iphone x because it's storage available on preorder day.one full price.

bought phone full price on verizon.

2 return scenario questions:

1) able walk apple store , swap phone 64gb x , trade in iphone 7 towards cost of new phone? cause issues verizon?

2) able "return" current iphone, trade in iphone 7 towards price (instead of getting apple gift card)?

1. did pay full price on iphone 7? under dpp (device payment plan)? if paid in full there no issues. might issue if it's on dpp.

2. don't think work. when trade in, amount have go on apple gift card, , use apple gift card when returning , repurchasing different size.
