selling off gaming computer , moving mbp web development, photography , video editing.
i'm wondering whether or not top spec 13" mbp able handle 10 minute 4k timeline , still have smooth editing experience (not fussed on render times, actual edit itself). won't using premiere, fcpx.
here able comment on how 13" perform using fcpx?
i'm looking @ top spec 13" or 15". cheers
editing h264 4k smoothly difficult hardware or software. using fcpx -- that's advantage since it's fast , uses intel's quick sync hardware-accelerated decode & encode.
there many h264 codecs , formats. more compute-intensive others. e.g, 4k h264 8-bit 4:2:0 panasonic gh4 ok, 10-bit 4:4:4 media gh5 slow. yet 4k 305 mbps h264 intra-frame content canon xc10 or xc15 smooth , fast. technically variants of h264 or avc.
separate consideration effects, vary in cpu , gpu requirements. decent timeline performance on initial content when start adding effects, edit performance slow down.
in general solution defer adding compute-intensive effects until timeline content locked down. e.g, don't try stabilize clips or apply neat video noise reduction until last steps.
4k editing want fastest recent computer can afford. said if can use proxies (a built-in fcpx feature) computer can edit 4k smoothly. edit multi-camera 4k on 2013 macbook air using proxies. must generate proxies @ either import time or later, takes time , adds 60% typical h264 camera media size.
prefer 15" mbp size because screen bigger , easier see. use top-spec 2016 mbp 15" , ok on 4k h264 create proxies besides short 5 min timeline. 2017 , 2015 imac 27s both top-spec 2017 faster in fcpx on h264 content, because kaby lake cpu has upgraded quick sync logic. if representative, 2017 mbp (which uses kaby lake) might considerably faster specific workflow 2016 model.

hi there! long time reader, first time poster! wondering if might able me out question. 2013 mbp w/ retina met unceremonious end courtesy of water damage. cost repair far worthwhile purchased replacement instead. however, turned out ssd (768gb!) appears ok. guy @ genius bar suggested third party external casing use (a) access data (since said apple charges $90cad or transfer over) , (b) use ssd external drive in future. kind enough remove ssd me. i found below option: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/owc/mau3envoypro/ i'm wondering if there other less expensive alternatives? couldn't find else online. owc enclosure not outrageously expensive i'm looking thrifty since don't plan on making use of it. thank much! i in similar situation, 2013 500gb blade ssd after buying used rmbp mid 2015. noticed ssd installed 2013, complained , got later faster ssd plus keep ...
